PRESS RELEASE

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — January 7, 2025 – Over the last year, Johnson & Wales University continued its commitment to being a good community partner by providing $5.3 million in voluntary payments and community contributions to the city of Providence. These contributions are part of a multi-year agreement made between the city and private colleges and universities in the area.

Johnson & Wales University is committed to making higher education accessible and affordable for students. As such, the university provided nearly $4 million in scholarships to Providence residents through initiatives such as the JWU Pledge

Contributions also comprise services and in-kind contributions to the city, such as the twice annual JWU Serves Day of Service, when students, faculty and staff volunteer in partnership with nonprofit organizations throughout the city and state. Other examples include:

  • Maintenance of public spaces surrounding campus
  • Initiatives to increase educational access and support for Providence residents
  • Volunteerism and community engagement efforts
  • A strong partnership with Providence Police Department and other public safety agencies
  • Support for city employees and Providence-based organizations
  • Partnerships for cultural and civic engagement in the city

"Providence has been our home for more than a century, and we are committed to being a good community partner and neighbor,” said JWU Providence President Joseph Greene, M.S., CPA. “From working with healthcare facilities to provide hands-on clinical experience for our College of Health & Wellness students, to athletic teams and student organizations holding drives to benefit local nonprofits or hosting community organizations on campus, the benefits to our community take many forms. We look forward to continuing this in our renewed agreement with the city.”
