PRESS RELEASE

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — April 7, 2025 – As part of its continued dedication to providing academically rigorous, high-quality education to students, Johnson & Wales University is proud to announce that two graduate-level counseling programs have been awarded accreditation.

The Master of Science degree programs – Addiction Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling – were awarded accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). CACREP is the leading accrediting body for the counseling profession. Earning CACREP accreditation involves a rigorous assessment of compliance with standards related to the learning environment, the counseling core curriculum, professional practice, program evaluation and various specialty areas.

“Achieving accreditation for our program is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and excellence that our faculty, staff, and students demonstrate every day,” said JWU College of Arts & Sciences Dean Michael Fein. “We are proud to offer a program that meets the highest standards and thank the council for its recognition of our program and faculty.”

This designation represents a significant milestone for the program and the product of a multiyear process. “We are thrilled to receive this acknowledgement that signals our programs’ alignment with the profession’s best practices and ethical standards,” said Director of Counselor Education Programs, Cheryl Almeida. “Receiving a graduate diploma from a CACREP-accredited program adds significant weight and marketability to a student’s MS degree. A degree from a CACREP-accredited program is widely recognized by licensing boards, community agencies, practitioners, and national professional associations, as a hallmark of excellence, making it a valuable credential for aspiring counselors.”
