Program Overview
Accounting is the global language of business and the basis for making management or operating decisions in organizations of all sizes. Through our Accounting bachelor’s degree program, you’ll learn how to apply major concepts, skills and values of the accounting profession. This includes how to communicate effectively, as well as identify and analyze ethical and global business issues.
You’ll get experience in labs working on assignments that simulate the same type of work you’ll need to perform in the workplace. You’ll also be exposed to various types of software used in the profession, including MS Office, TaxWise, QuickBooks, MS Dynamics GP and the FASB Codification.
In addition, you’ll have opportunities for academic and cultural experiences, such as networking events, studying abroad, participating in an internship or dedicating your time and talents to community service. Experienced-based education opportunities, such as the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program for low-income taxpayers, provide you with valuable experience and serve the community with much-needed income tax preparation service.
In your junior year, you’ll have the opportunity to enroll in the accelerated MBA program, which allows you to take both undergraduate and graduate courses in your senior year, leading to an MBA with an accounting concentration.
After completing our program, you’ll be well positioned for opportunities in public accounting firms and private, governmental and nonprofit organizations. Positions include, but are not limited to, staff accountants, cost accountants, tax accountants and auditors. Our curriculum will help prepare you to pursue certifications upon graduation, including certified public accountant, certified fraud examiner, certified internal auditor, certified information system auditor, certified management accountant and others.
JWU accounting alumni continue their close relationship with JWU after graduation, frequently returning to campus to mentor current students, offer career advice and serve as connections for internship and career opportunities at their many places of employment, including, but not limited to, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, the Defense Contract Audit Agency, the IRS, BlumShapiro, Citizens Financial Group and Hasbro.
Students wishing to satisfy the 150 Hours of College Education requirement, now required in many states before being allowed to take the Uniform Certified Public Accountants Examination, may achieve this objective and at the same time earn a master's degree by applying for acceptance to the university’s MBA program at the end of their junior year.
Acceptance will be granted provided the student receives the recommendation of two undergraduate faculty members, successfully completes an interview process, fulfills the requirements for the bachelor of science degree, and meets the minimum GPA requirement. Students wishing to pursue CPA licensure can learn about additional state specific licensure requirements by visiting NASBA.org.
